Dear Netflix…

Did anyone else get an email that says this:

Dear Monica,

We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into two separate plans to better reflect the costs of each. Now our members have a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan, or both.

Your current $9.99 a month membership for unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be split into 2 distinct plans:

Plan 1: Unlimited Streaming (no DVDs) for $7.99 a month

Plan 2: Unlimited DVDs, 1 out at-a-time (no streaming) for $7.99 a month

Your price for getting both of these plans will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99). You don’t need to do anything to continue your memberships for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

These prices will start for charges on or after September 1, 2011.

You can easily change or cancel your unlimited streaming plan, unlimited DVD plan, or both, by going to the Plan Change page in Your Account.

We realize you have many choices for home entertainment, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have questions, please feel free to call us at 1-888-357-1516.

Like seriously??? I’ve had a Netflix account for several years now, as have many others, and have already gone through a couple of pricing changes. But this one??? This one takes the cake. You are going to increase our cost by 60% for us to get exactly what we get right now. No better streaming video choices. No better streaming video quality. No quicker DVD releases. No nothing, but less money in my bank account. How is this a deal??? Who are these changes going to benefit??? YOU! What is the customer going to get out of this? NOTHING. Are you Nucking Futs???

Netflix, unless you decide to leave your pricing plans as they are… I’ll most likely be canceling my account… I mean… You state in your email that “You can easily change or cancel your unlimited streaming plan, unlimited DVD plan, or both, by going to the Plan Change page in Your Account.” So you don’t really care if I stay or go right?!?! That’s like saying.. Gee thanks for being a customer, but if you don’t like our new pricing plans… you can eff off… Screw you Netflix… Screw you… Your competitors are looking better and better…

**UPDATE: I finally got through to customer service, and they literally told me that they were not “holding me hostage with a contract and that I was free to leave their service any time” Ummm Wow… you said it… See ya…

  1. Ugh, this is irritating! we switched to Netflix about a year ago. We used to have blockbuster but their customer service was crap (not to mention they were having financial trouble.) We had the 1 DVD/unlimited streaming plan w/ Netflix. I feel like a hostage, are there any other mail services? I guess I’ll drop the streaming option, we can never get that to work well, anyway.

  2. Yes, I got the same email that you got. Not happy about it at all. We already pay for the 3 DVDs so I’m trying to see if our cost goes up. It looks like its just for the 1 DVD a month, but I’ll tell you what, it makes me mad and it will be VERY easy to leave at this point. We have NOT been a customer for years, only about 5 months, so it will be an expense we don’t have to pay, so $20 a month for another service. Any ideas of who is better? We use redbox a lot but not as many choices.
What about for streaming…. I hate this because Netflix dominates the market – allowing us to use it through our Wii has been a perk. Grrr…..

  3. Nicole,
It looks like it’s going to go up for all of the plans… They’re tacking on the $7.99 streaming to all of them…
